The First 12 Weeks

Newborn sleep advice you can check the source of.

Fourteen short chapters for the first twelve weeks. Every claim traced to the AAP, CDC or NHS.

Cover of The First 12 Weeks, a newborn sleep survival guide

It is 3am and the internet disagrees with itself.

"Never wake a sleeping baby."

Both. Tonight.

"Wake your baby every three hours to feed."

You are not short of newborn sleep advice. You are drowning in it, and most of it arrives with no name attached and no way to check where it came from.

This book takes one position at a time, says plainly where it comes from, and numbers the source so you can go and read it yourself.

What is actually in it

Fourteen chapters, grouped three ways. Short enough to read one while feeding.

Safety first

  • 1 Read this first: the ABCs of safe sleep
  • 8 The sleep environment
  • 11 When it isn't a sleep problem

Finding the rhythm

  • 2 Why your newborn isn't broken
  • 3 Wake windows by age
  • 4 Reading sleepy cues before the overtired cliff
  • 5 The "drowsy but awake" myth and what to do instead
  • 6 The wind-down routine: 4 steps, same every time
  • 7 Feed, play, sleep, and when it doesn't work

Nights, naps and you

  • 9 Naps: the 30-minute wake-up, contact naps, motion naps
  • 10 Nights: stretches, dream feeds, the 3am reset
  • 12 The 4-month change and how to prepare
  • 13 Survival for you
  • 14 Printables

Plus four printable charts, made to read in black and white at 100% scale.

Every claim has a number next to it

Sourcing is the whole point. When the book tells you something, there is a numbered marker beside it, and that number resolves to a real reference at the back. Not a link to another blog. The actual guidance, or the actual paper.

Here is one, exactly as it appears.

Keep white-noise machines away from the crib and turn the volume down. They can reach sound levels loud enough to matter.[18]

18. Hugh SC, Wolter NE, Propst EJ, Gordon KA, Cushing SL, Papsin BC. "Infant sleep machines and hazardous sound pressure levels." Pediatrics. 2014;133(4):677-681.

There are nineteen of these. You can check every one.

Before you buy

This will not suit everyone

Written for you if

  • You are in the first twelve weeks, or about to be.
  • You want to know where advice came from before you follow it.
  • You would rather have one ordered source than forty open tabs.
  • You read on a phone, at night, one-handed.

Probably not for you if

  • Your baby is past four months. Sleep has changed by then, and this covers earlier.
  • You want a sleep-training method or a fixed schedule to follow.
  • You want a guarantee about how your baby will sleep. Nobody can honestly give you that.
  • You need advice about a specific medical condition. That is a conversation with your pediatrician.

Questions people ask first

No. Sleep training usually means a structured method for teaching a baby to fall asleep alone, and it is generally not recommended before around four months. This book covers the weeks before that. It is about safety, rhythm and realistic expectations, not a method to follow.

Honestly, no book can promise that, and you should be suspicious of one that does. Newborn sleep in the first twelve weeks is mostly biology, and it varies enormously between babies. What this gives you is an accurate picture of what is normal, so you can stop lying awake wondering whether something is wrong.

Reflux is covered directly, including the AAP's guidance that a flat sleep surface still applies. For prematurity, or any specific medical condition, your own pediatrician's advice comes first, every time. This book is general education, not a substitute for that conversation.

Yes. The last four sections are built for it. They read clearly in black and white at 100% scale, so you can photocopy them freely for your own home.

A download link arrives straight after checkout, and it is emailed to you as well. There is nothing to ship and nothing to wait for.
